in Angkor Temples

Temple Name: Kbal Spean
Notable Features: Carvings of Hindu and Buddhist Mythological motifs.
Getting There: From siem Reap, Kbal Spean is located along the road to Banteay Srei. You will pass Banteay Srei and continue on the road for another 13 km before you reach Kbal Spean. The ride takes approximately 90 minutes. In the dry season, the road can be unbearably dusty. In the wet season, the road is covered in mud patches. After the 90-minute tuk tuk ride, you will need to trek uphill for another 45 minutes. You should only visit Kbal Spean with an experienced guide that knows the area well. If you are only visiting Cambodia’s temple region for a few days, you should not go to Kbal Spean.

The Valley of 1000 Lingas

Kbal Spean, also known as the valley of 1000 Lingas, is situated on the southwestern slopes of the Kulen Hills. The site consists of a series bas-reliefs located in and around the Stung Kbal Spean River. The carvings depict Hindu and Buddhist mythological images.

The jungle around Kbal Spean is gorgeous, but can be unforgiving. Visiting Kbal Spean is not for the faint of heart. In the dry season, the dust is thick. In the wet season, the footpaths are muddy and you will need penty of bug repellent. Once you arrive at Kbal Spean, you will be overcome by a deep sense of accomplishment. These ruins are not very touristed, resulting in a serene experience for the adventurous traveler.
